History
The Hon. G.C. Hawker founded the Bungaree Stud in 1841 by purchasing from Thomas Icely, Carcoar, NSW, 2000 ewes of CAMDEN PARK, Camden, NSW, (see Reference Flock), blood in lamb to Steiger rams. In 1858, five Negrette rams were used but their progeny discarded. In 1861, five or six Rambouillet rams were imported from France and in 1862 John Hope presented another imported Rambouillet ram to the Hon. G.C. Hawker. Three rams were purchased from John Murray, MOUNT CRAWFORD, Williamstown, SA, (see F. No. 127), one each in the years 1865, 1874 and 1887 and were used in the stud. In 1884, 3 rams were obtained from W. Gibson and Sons, Scone, Epping, Tas. (see Reference Flock), and were used in the stud. From 1885 to 1888, 3 rams were purchased from WANGANELLA, F. No. 83, of the Premier and Warrior strain. After the death of the Hon. G.C. Hawker in 1895, the BUNGAREE (see F. No. 110) stud was carried on by his sons under the name of Hawker Bros. In 1906, the firm of Hawker Bros was dissolved and the whole of the stud and flock sheep were divided into five equal parts, M.S. Hawker taking over as his share of 2021 stud ewes, 5876 flock ewes and 235 rams and the northern portion of Bungaree which he called NORTH BUNGAREE. In 1913, portion of the NORTH BUNGAREE estate was sold and all the flock sheep were disposed of. Since that date, NORTH BUNGAREE, F. No. 125, has been run entirely as a stud sheep proposition. In 1933, on the death of M.S. Hawker, the stud was taken over by his executors. In 1992, following the winding up of the Estate, the son of the late M.S. Hawker, Charles, assumed ownership of the Merino stud, trading as M.C.S. Hawker. In 1993, M.E.B. Hawker of West Bungaree Spalding purchased the stud sheep comprising 60 sires, 81 reserves, 200 hoggets, 850 ram lambs, 540 special ewes, 630 lst stud ewes, 490 2nd stud ewes and 380 hoggets totalling 3,231, the balance of the flock being disposed of as commercial. Resigned August 2001.
