This  stud  was  founded  in  1886  by  Melbourne  merchants  and  Pastoralists,  John  and  George  Whittingham.  When  they  bought  the  Willandra  estate,  North-West  of  Hillston,  in  1863,  the  station  had  a  flock  of  Tasmanian  sheep  descended  from  Merinos  brought  from  Saxony  to  Van  Dieman's  land  by  the  Forlonge  family  in  1829.  Between  1880  and  1886,  Whittingham  brothers  introduced  additional  stock  from  Tasmania  to  the  Willandra  flock  (probably  selected  from  Belle  Vue),  and  to  these  ewes  and  a  ram  they  added  3  rams  bred  WANGANELLA,  F.  No.  83,  BOONOKE,  F.  No.  7,  and  BUNGAREE,  F.  No.  110.  In  1894,  the  London  Bank  of  Australia  became  the  mortgagee-in-possession  of  Willandra  and  the  station  manager,  Arthur  Laird,  reconstructed  the  flock  and  made  further  additions  of  Tasmanian  and  Wanganella  blood.  At  the  same  time,  he  purchased  ewes  of  Tasmanian  and  Wanganella  blood  bred  on  Canoon  Station.  In  1912,  the  bank  sold  the  station  and  stud  to  T.A.  Field,  James  and  Stanley  Vickery,  and  in  1932  this  partnership  was  dissolved,  with  Vickerys  retaining  ownership.  In  1960,  Willandra  was  sold  to  the  New  Zealand  and  Australian  Land  Company  and  taken  over  in  1969  by  Dalgety-New  Zealand  Loan.  In  1972,  Willandra  became  a  national  park  and  the  stud  was  moved  to  the  Yanko  Station,  Jerilderie.  In  November  1974,  the  complete  stud  was  purchased  by  the  Wells  family  and  moved  to  their  property  at  Jerilderie.
