This  stud  was  founded  in  1934  by  J.  &  M.  Russell  when  50  ewes  were  selected  from  a  flock  of  3000  and  mated  with  VALLEYFIELD,  Epping,  Tas,  and  WINTON,  F.  No.  Tas.  1,  rams.  The  MELROSE  flock  was  commenced  in  1880  by  John  Russell  with  Tasmanian  sheep  and,  in  1905,  250  ewes  were  purchased  from  WOODHOUSE  STATION,  Vic.  Prior  to  the  selection  of  ewes  to  form  the  stud,  rams  used  were  from  BELLE  VUE  (see  Reference  Flock)  and  the  estate  of  W.H.  Davidson,  COLIBAN  PARK,  Vic.  The  partnership  of  J.  &  M.  Russell  was  dissolved  in  October  1956,  when  the  stud  was  divided  between  the  partners.  J.  Russell  carried  on  the  MELROSE  stud.  In  1975,  J.  Russell  transferred  the  stud  to  his  two  sons,  J.B.  &  G.E.  Russell.  In  1980,  the  partnership  of  J.B.  &  G.E.  Russell  was  dissolved  and  the  stud  was  transferred  to  J.B.  &  J.B.  Russell.  In  December  2001,  the  VSMSA  approved  the  upgrade  from  flock  to  stud,  of  37  ewes.
