This  stud  was  founded  in  1947  by  J.S.  Williams  by  the  purchase  of  50  ewes  which  had  been  mated  with  a  WANGANELLA,  F.  No.  83,  bred  ram  from  ELI  ELWAH,  NSW,  F.  No.  34.  In  1950,  a  selection  of  300  ewes  was  made  from  the  THALABA  flock  and  added  to  the  stud.  The  THALABA  flock  was  commenced  in  1908  with  SPRINGFIELD,  F.  No.  73,  blood  ewes  and  until  1922  only  SPRINGFIELD,  F.  No.  73,  rams  were  used.  From  1923  until  1936,  rams  used  were  of  HADDON  RIG,  F.  No.  48,  blood.  MURGHA,  F.  No.  437,  rams  were  purchased  from  that  date.  In  1951,  the  name  of  the  stud  was  changed  from  'Malabar'  to  'Koonwarra'.  In  1952,  a  partnership  comprising  of  J.S.,  J.L.  and  V.M.  Williams  was  formed,  trading  as  Thalaba  Pastoral  Co,  which  carried  on  the  stud.  On  1st  July  1953,  Miss  M.E.  Williams  was  taken  into  the  partnership.  In  July  1998,  Charles  Curran,  trading  as  Narruc  Investments,  purchased  the  stud  and  moved  it  from  Crookwell  to  Canowindra.  On  1/1/06,  the  Koonwarra  stud  was  then  moved  to  Boorowa  and  established  as  a  joint  venture  by  C.P.  Curran  of  Capital  Investment  Rural  Pty  Ltd  and  C.  &  J.  Merriman  of  Merrignee  Pty  Ltd,  under  the  name  Koonwarra  Merino  Stud  Partnership.  On  21/5/14,  this  partnership  was  disbanded  and  the  stud  is  now  owned  solely  by  Charlie  &  Jono  Merriman  trading  as  C.T.  Merriman  &  Son.  On  1  July  2018  this  stud  and  the  partnership  of  C.T.  Merriman  &  Son  were  tranferred  to  Johnathan  and  Anna  Merriman.
