About  the  year  1790  the  King  of  Spain  presented  some  Merino  sheep  to  the  Dutch  Government,  a  portion  of  which  were  sent  to  the  Cape  Colony.  Later,  the  British  Commandant,  Col  Gordon,  took  an  interest  in  them  and  acquired  a  small  flock.  After  his  death,  his  widow  sold  some  of  them  to  Captain  Henry  Waterhouse,  the  master  of  a  vessel  trading  with  Sydney.  He  took  them  with  him  to  Sydney  and  sold  them,  some  to  Captain  John  MaCarthur  and  some  to  the  Rev  Samuel  Marsden.  Later,  Marsden's  flock  was  moved  to  Gamboola,  Molong,  NSW,  this  property  was  owned  by  his  nephew,  W.M.  Betts.  About  the  year  1840  the  Hon  John  Smith  bought  the  property  and  sheep  from  W.M.Betts.  In  1848,  the  Hon  John  Smith  bought  rams  from  the  Australian  Agricultural  Co  and  later  imported  Negrettes  from  Spain.  Kater  Bros,  then  owners  of  MUMBLEBONE,  NSW,  made  their  first  purchase  from  the  Hon  John  Smith  in  1879.  It  consisted  of  75  ewes  and  1  ram.  For  several  successive  years  they  bought  from  GAMBOOLA,  the  cast-for-age  ewes  with  rams  to  serve  them.  In  the  year  1906,  after  the  death  of  E.H.  Kater,  the  sheep  were  divided  between  his  executors  and  the  Hon.  H.E.  Kater,  M.L.C.  The  portion  allotted  to  the  latter  since  that  date  has  been  known  as  the  EGELABRA,  F.  No.  32,  stud.  In  1947  a  proprietary  company  was  formed  and  has  since  carried  on  the  stud  under  the  name  of  H.E.  Kater  and  Son  Pty  Ltd.  From  1879  to  1885,  several  hundred  ewes  were  purchased  annually  from  the  GAMBOOLA  stud.  From  1941  to  1948,  3975  lambs  were  purchased  from  WOODSIDE,  F.  No.  749.  These  lambs  were  all  sold  and  not  used  for  breeding  purposes.
